Degree in Three 2020-2021

 What is degree in three?
A degree in three is a representation of the 120 credit hour degree program as a three year pathway alternative for students. This option allows you to see how you can complete your degree in an accelerated time period.

What are the benefits of a degree in three?
By decreasing your time to graduation, you will incur less cost and be ready to start your career. Students who participate in degree in three programs are retained at a higher rate and graduate faster.

Is the degree in three for you?
If you have 30 or more credit hours, either through dual credit/AP as first time in college students or as transfer students with community college or university credit hours, you may be eligible for the degree in three.

Contact your academic advisor if you have specific questions.

The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (B.A.A.S.) Degree is offered via New College at UNT.  This degree program is highly individualized, with each student working directly with an advisor to build upon prior credits in creating a degree program.  The advisor will help with student to maximize the academic credits transferred and to prepare for future educational and career goals.

The B.A.A.S. degree consists of 120 total credit hours, of which at least 36 must be upper level (3000 or 4000 numbered) and at least 30 completed at UNT.  The program offers many online courses as well courses taught in Denton, in Frisco, and at the Collin Higher Education Center.  A limited version of the degree is offered fully online via Coursera.  See https://www.coursera.org/degrees/unt-online-bachelor-completion? for more information.

Working with the advisor, students use a combination of transfer credits, military credits, and UNT courses to complete the following components of the B.A.A.S. degree:

University core curriculum (42 credit hours)

  • See catalog.unt.edu for a full listing of core courses.
  • Applied Arts and Sciences students transfer in core courses, sometimes the entire core.

Occupational specialization (21 credit hours)

  • These are often transfer courses coming from military coursework or from an A.A.S. degree or certificate at a community college.
To see examples of how specific A.A.S. degrees could lead to the UNT B.A.A.S., see ntccc.unt.edu/aas-baas.  Select UNT under universities, and all of the options will appear below.

Applied Arts and Sciences degree program core courses (9 credit hours)

  • Three upper level courses taken while at UNT by all students in the program.

Specialty concentrations (typically three 12 credit hour concentrations OR one 12 hour concentration and one 24 hours focus area)

  • Selected in consultation with the advisor to meet the goals of the individual student.
  • Courses are drawn from a combination of transfer courses and UNT courses from all departments.
  • Concentrations include things ranging from non-profit management to chemistry, computer security to human resources, health studies to learning technology.  Talk to an advisor to see what would work for you.
  • Focus areas allow for a degree that draws heavily on a particular emphasis area and have been developed in collaboration with other UNT departments.  Speak to an advisor for a list of all of the options.

Electives (12 credit hours)

To consult with an advisor about your individual plan, call Applied Arts and Sciences at 940-369-8129 or email baas@unt.edu.  Appointments can be done in person in Denton, in Frisco or in McKinney (Collin Higher Education Center).  They can also be arranged via Zoom or by phone.
