Initiatives

The University of North Texas is a Carnegie R1 public research university and one of the largest universities in the Dallas-Fort Worth region — one of the most dynamic regions in the world. Through its campuses in Denton and Frisco, Texas, UNT serves more than 42,000 students with 230 degree programs and awarded nearly 12,000 degrees last year. UNT proudly serves in the vanguard of leading American universities willing to measure success by how well we educate and support every qualified student who commits to learning with us. We deliver outcomes that matter to students, families, employers, and the nation, as a public university committed to create enduring value for the public good. 

The Office of the Provost oversees and contributes to numerous initiatives that support our students, faculty, staff, and the communities we serve.

Career-Aligned Learning

From our first engagement with students, through their time enrolled with us, and well into their careers, we embrace our responsibility to provide them with knowledge, skills, and experiences that will prepare them for lives of meaning and purpose.

In addition to investing in data-powered, career-aligned academic advising models, UNT is developing scalable work experience opportunities as an inaugural member of Arizona State University’s Work-Integrated Learning Accelerator and the first Texas university to partner with the national nonprofit Braven, which equips students with career-ready skills, networks, and confidence to succeed in an increasingly competitive workforce. In Fall 2025, UNT launched the Texas Talent Accelerator, a regional collaborative that connects colleges, universities, businesses, and community leaders to plan for the jobs North Texas will need in the future. These and other initiatives are bolstered by the robust resources and support services offered through the UNT Career Center.

Flipped Courses and Hybrid Learning

The University of North Texas is undertaking a broad effort to adopt a flipped classroom/hybrid learning model to ensure every UNT student has a small, high-impact class experience even in our largest courses. This initiative is a cornerstone of our updated curriculum strategy, aimed at significantly improving first-year retention and student success.

UNT will offer approximately 40 new flipped courses in Fall 2026 and continue to grow our catalog for Spring 2027 and beyond, building on the existing work and expertise of UNT faculty. While our primary focus is on large introductory-level courses, students of all levels can benefit from a flipped classroom and hybrid learning.

Learning Ecosystem for Empowering Futures (LEEF)

The Learning Ecosystem for Empowering Futures (LEEF) is a new model in higher education that places learning and innovation — and the individuals involved in this work — at the center of UNT’s student success mission. Guided by the creativity and expertise of our faculty and staff, LEEF is designed to support projects that have potential to change how we understand teaching and learning and empower educators across UNT to use this knowledge to advance student success, research excellence, and societal impact. LEEF features three distinct but interconnected units:

• The Teaching Hub creates a supportive community of educators who come together to better understand pedagogical practices and develop new skills and structures that support student success at UNT.
• The Learning Institute is a research community dedicated to the discovery of knowledge about learning that can drive innovations supporting student success at UNT.
• The Curriculum Connector brings together UNT educators and employers from across our region to design an integrated curriculum that supports our students along their educational journeys.
