Non-Degree Seeking Students
Applicants who wish to take courses but do not plan to earn a degree at UNT should apply as a non-degree seeking student. Undergraduate non-degree seeking students may take up to 15 undergraduate credit hours at the University of North Texas.

Step 1: Apply for Admission

Before you can take courses at UNT, you must apply and be admitted as a non-degree seeking student. You can find the undergraduate, non-degree seeking application here. Non-degree seeking admission does not guarentee course enrollment.

Step 2: Review Course Requirements

Before registering,  review course descriptions in the UNT Catalog to confirm that you meet all enrollment requirements.  Some courses may require prerequisites, be limited to declared majors, or require instructor consent.

For courses that require prerequisites: If you completed equivalent coursework at another institution, the academic department will need to verify that your previous coursework meets requirements before you can enroll. This usually involves sharing a copy of your transcript with the department offering the course.

Departments can review your transcript, help determine eligibility, and enroll you in the course. Contact information for academic departments can be found here.

Step 3: Register for Classes

Course registration opens for non-degree seeking students via your my.unt.edu account two weeks before classes begin, regardless of the date you are admitted.

Dates and Deadlines

Non-degree seeking students must adhere to all university dates and deadlines. For a list of important dates including:

All of these dates can impact transcripts, GPAs, and tuition refunds so it is VERY IMPORTANT that you are aware of UNT's deadlines.

FAQs

Am I required to attend orientation?

Non-degree seeking students are not required to attend orientation. However, after admission you will receive access to an online orientation module.
We strongly encourage reviewing the module, as it includes helpful information about course registration, academic department contacts, university policies, and important deadlines.

The module opens two weeks before classes begin.

Can UNT Advisors tell me which classes will fulfill requirements at my home college or university?

NO. It is important that you are advised by your institution BEFORE you apply to take classes as a non-degree seeking student at UNT. Our advisors cannot provide academic advising toward how UNT credit will be utilized by your home institution.

What if a class fills up before I can register?

We recommend utilizing the waitlist feature in the enrollment tab of your my.unt.edu account. Students will be added to a class in the order they signed up on the waitlist if spaces open up. We cannot guarantee that you will be added to a class that you waitlist.

The class I want to sign up for requires a permission code and/or is restricted. What should I do?

Please read course description carefully when selecting classes:

  • Some classes are restricted. You will need to work with the academic department that houses the class to determine if you will be permitted to register for the class. Departmental contact information can be found here.
  • Some classes are restricted to out-of-state students only and you will be required to choose another section of the class.
