The ELAR section contains both multiple-choice questions and an essay portion.
The multiple-choice questions contain 30 questions measuring skills in reading comprehension and writing structure. If the initial college-readiness benchmark is not reached in the first 30 questions, the ELAR Diagnostic Test is initiated containing 48 questions covering the same content areas. This diagnostic level is given as a second opportunity to meet TSI requirements. Diagnostic levels below requirements are used by the institution for placement.
The Essay Test requires a 300–600-word essay following a randomly selected prompt. The essay score is based on purpose and focus, organization and structure, development and support, sentence structure, mechanical conventions, and critical thinking.
