Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to share a preliminary overview of the results from UNT’s 2024 COACHE Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey, administered to all eligible full-time faculty in Spring 2024. UNT’s response rate — 52% of the approximately 1,300 faculty members surveyed — exceeded our peer institutions’ response rates by 6.2 percentage points. Thank you to all our respondents for taking the time to share your candid feedback.

The COACHE survey is one of the most comprehensive tools UNT employs in our efforts to align faculty experiences with our vision and ensure all faculty feel valued and empowered to contribute to the university's overarching mission. Our results provide valuable insights into faculty perspectives, enabling us to tailor policies and practices toward a more supportive academic environment.

The survey assesses 25 benchmarks of faculty job satisfaction within the academic workplace, with areas of strength defined as any benchmark where our institution scores first or second among our selected comparison group and in the top 30 percent of the COACHE 85-member cohort. UNT’s areas of strength are:

• Appreciation and Recognition
• Departmental Quality
• Governance: Adaptability
• Leadership: Senior, Divisional
• Mentoring
• Nature of Work: Teaching
• Promotion to Full

These results are heartening, as they indicate that our efforts to address areas of concern identified in past COACHE surveys have had an impact. While our 2024 results compare favorably to our peers, we know there is still work to be done in some places as we continue to make UNT an institution where all faculty thrive. 

In the coming months, you can expect to receive more information and detailed survey results from UNT’s COACHE Steering Committee, co-led by Vice Provost for Faculty Success Holly Hutchins and Brian Richardson (Professor, Communication Studies). This will include an executive summary, college-level reports, and opportunities to engage with the Steering Committee as we chart long-term action plans.
