Setbacks are a normal part of learning, and many students go through the academic alert and probation process each year.

If you are experiencing academic struggles, we want you to know that you are not alone!

By working with your advisors and other campus partners, you can return to good academic standing and go on to graduate from UNT.
The important thing to remember is that academic challenges can be met and overcome with hard work, by learning new strategies, and by asking for help and advice when it is needed.

For UNT students on Academic Probation:

  • Your academic advisors are dedicated to providing one-on-one support as you work toward academic success.  Get started mapping your academic plan by meeting with your advisor here at /advising/get-advised
  • The Learning Center in Sage Hall 170 can provide you with free, personalized academic coaching. To learn more about academic coaching, visit https://learningcenter.unt.edu/coaching  or call 940-369-7006. Students on academic alert may be required to attend an academic coaching session during the upcoming term.
  • Your general wellbeing is an essential component of your journey back to academic success. We offer many services and programs to help you with your financial stability, physical health, mental health, and other personal concerns.  We encourage you to use the “Keys to Succeed” at success.unt.edu/find-support.

For UNT students who have been Academically Suspended:

It is essential that you utilize your academic advising team as you work toward returning to UNT. Advising staff can help you by discussing strategies for improving academic performance, which may include:

  • Enrollment in a community college to help maintain academic progress towards degree completion. Note: before enrolling at another institution, contact your academic advising office to verify course transferability and equivalencies.
  • Repeating courses that will directly impact the cumulative GPA.
  • Enrolling in one or two courses in an upcoming summer term that may help you improve your GPA.

The university will keep track of your UNT GPA and semester GPA to determine your academic standing.

**The minimum cumulative UNT grade point average (UNT CGPA) a student must achieve to remain in good standing is 1.8 in the first enrollment period, 2.0 for all subsequent semesters.
