Shannon's Tips for Student Success

What is your favorite place or thing to do on campus? Why?

My favorite place on campus is Chilton Hall. It’s home to the College of Health & Public Service, the College of Merchandising, Hospitality & Tourism, the College of Music Advising office, and the Media Library. I love the history of the building and how well they managed to preserve the outside walls when they enclosed the courtyard in the 1980’s – it’s sometimes called the “inside out building” and it’s a great space to take graduation pictures. It was also recently ranked by Eagle Ambassadors as one of the best places to study on campus.

What advice do you have for students who are undecided in their major?

It’s okay to question if the major you’re currently pursuing is the right one for you. It’s also okay to just not know what you want to major in. And it’s absolutely okay to change your mind! For some students, deciding on a major can feel overwhelming. It’s 100% understandable – there are a lot of options. Take some time to think about what interests you, what you can envision yourself doing that fulfills you, where you want to see yourself in 5, 10, 15 years. Use the resources that you have as a student to find what best works for you and go for it! Check out the Exploring Majors website for tools that we have that can help you on your journey.

What advice do you have for prospective UNT students?

Research! Take a minute (or 30) to explore the UNT website. Use the search function at the top of the page. Really dig deep into all the information that you have at your fingertips about our university, our programs, and our campus-life. See something interesting? Bookmark the page so it’s at the ready later.

If you’re a Transfer Student coming from a Texas community college or 4-year institution: use those Transfer Guides to help you see how your credits will transfer to UNT. UNT works hard to make sure that they line up with the Texas Common Core Numbering System (TCCNS) to ensure students know beforehand how their credits will transfer in.

What is the number one resource you recommend to students who are exploring majors?

The Exploring Majors website! We have so many great tools you can use to explore your interests, career options (also, shoutout Career Center), and the majors we have here at UNT. If you’re lost/confused and don’t know where to start, this will be a really helpful site to start with.
