Year 2

Year 2: August 2016 through July 2017

Monthly Advocate Meetings. The Advocate Coordinator at each partner institution continued to organize monthly men-only meetings of their respective advocate groups to foster ongoing education related to gender equity.  During the year, Advocate Coordinators released a call for new advocates and worked with institution PIs, deans, and the women advisory group to establish Ally training goals.  Advocate Coordinators continued to communicate by conference call with NDSU at least once per semester.  The timeline was September 2016 through May 2017.

Pilot Ally Training. Using materials developed in consultation with the NDSU during year 1, advocates from each partner institution piloted one Ally training session during the fall of 2016.  A graduate-student observer collected ethnographic notes of the training, which will also be evaluated using surveys and other assessment material developed by NDSU. The timeline was fall of 2016.

Ally Training. Using feedback from the pilot ally training session, advocates from each partner institution revised their ally training materials and offer two ally training sessions during the spring of 2017.  A graduate-student observer collected ethnographic notes of the training, which was also evaluated using forms developed by NDSU. The timeline was spring of 2017.

Web Resources. NDSU developed and maintains a web page, hosted on the NDSU web site, for each partner institution; the web page includes a list of each institution’s Advocates & Allies.  NDSU alsos maintain a web-accessible repository for Advocate & Allies training materials and resources using contributions from NDSU and all partner institutions. The timeline was October 2016 through May 2017.

ASEE Ally Training Preparation. The NDSU advocate team, working with members from the ASEE Diversity Committee and the ASEE Women in Engineering Division, completed necessary planning, paperwork, and approval for multiple sessions of ally training during the 2017 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition. The timeline was October 2016 through May 2017.

Knowledge Building/Evaluation/Dissemination. NDSU continued to coordinate with partner institutions in the administration of evaluation instruments and the collection and analysis of evaluation data.  Evaluation teams continued to compile and analyze evaluation data and used it to drive program improvements as well as advance understanding of the development and efficacy of male faculty advocacy groups. The timeline was October 2016 through May 2017.

PLAN Workshop, Fargo, North Dakota. The PLAN workshop, was held at NDSU, at the end of the spring semester 2017.  Grant funds covered travel expenses for the advocate coordinator from each partner institution (5 individuals), each advisory board member (4 individuals), and the project evaluator (1 individual).  All NDSU investigators and advocate trainers also attended.  The PLAN Workshop featured the following activities: (1) NDSU evaluation team conducted interviews and surveys of the advocate coordinators of each partner institution.
