New Dean of UNT’s College of Visual Arts and Design

I am very pleased to announce that Greg Watts, chair of the art department at Metropolitan State University of Denver, has been named the new dean of UNT’s College of Visual Arts and Design.

Our College of Visual Arts and Design – one of the best art schools in the Southwest and nation – is an important hub for the advancement of education and culture. Our internationally renowned faculty are dedicated to fostering the creativity of our students and growing our reputation as one of the nation’s most comprehensive visual arts schools. I believe Mr. Watts to be an energetic and talented leader, who will complement and enhance the strengths of the college.

At Metropolitan State, Mr. Watts has served as chair of the art department and executive director of the university’s off-campus Center for Visual Art since 1999. As chair, he led the department to accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, increased the number of degree offerings, completed a comprehensive revision of the curriculum and increased enrollments. Mr. Watts also served as Metropolitan State’s president for the Council of Chairs.

Prior to his appointment as chair, he was an associate professor and coordinator of photography and digital arts. Mr. Watts officially assumes his position as dean in August.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Professor Eric Ligon for serving as interim dean since fall 2014. Under his leadership, the college maintained its high standards for excellence in teaching and student performance.

I also want to thank College of Music Dean Jim Scott and all of the members of the CVAD dean search committee for their dedication throughout the search process and for an outstanding outcome.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Watts to the UNT community.

Sincerely,
Finley Graves
