Dear Members of the UNT Community,

In his letter to you on Tuesday, Dr. Pohl addressed the steps he is taking to keep the strategic planning process moving
forward. He has asked me to take the lead in this effort and to work closely with the university community to present a
plan to the Board of Regents. While President Pohl clearly stated that the Academic Plan should be the cornerstone of the
University Strategic Plan, it is just as clear that the strategic planning process must involve the efforts of the full university
community.

It is up to each of us to work collaboratively to keep the university moving forward. I believe that we can use the
strategic planning process to help us do just that - creating both a plan and the opportunity to bring the university
community into important discussions about our future.

I will be moving forward on two parallel fronts - working closely with the other Vice Presidents to refine the sections that
would relate specifically to their areas and engaging the full campus in conversations that will refine the plan and bring us
toward a common vision.

I will post a request for feedback regarding the draft version of the plan that was presented to the Administrative and
Academics Committee of the Board of Regents at their meeting at the end of last semester. This will be placed on the
web this week, on a page designed to keep you up to date on our progress (http://web2.unt.edu/vpaa/strategicplan.htm).

Please bookmark that page and visit it often. It will hold updated information on the plan and the planning process.

In addition to the opportunity for electronic feedback I have scheduled Open Forums to invite UNT community members
to participate in face-to-face discussions about the plan.

I have asked Celia Williamson (celia@unt.edu ) and Margaret Vestal (mvestal@unt.edu ) to assist me in this project.
Please contact them with any questions or suggestions you may have.

The University of North Texas is on the threshold of a future that can only be realized with thoughtfulness and energy.
When we arrive at our destination, I hope that every member of the student body, faculty, staff and administration will be
able to personally reflect on her or his participation in this strategic planning process with a sense of satisfaction and
accomplishment. I am committed to working together on a plan that will shape the next great era of our development.

Sincerely,

Howard C. Johnson, Provost
