Excellence in Student-Centered Education

 

UNT will provide a stimulating, supportive and rigorous educational experience to an outstanding and diverse student body, preparing students for leadership in a changing world.  

 

Strategies:

1.1    Assure a complete and rigorous curriculum that is designed specifically to develop students’ capacities for in-depth understanding, appreciation for diversity, critical thinking, and life-long learning;

1.2    Identify and provide strategic support to those current and potential graduate programs across the university that hold the highest potential for excellence or importance to UNT and its communities;

1.3    Nurture and challenge diverse learners through peer and mentor relationships, strong learning communities grounded in respect for the contributions of various cultures, backgrounds and viewpoints, active student involvement in the life of the university, and through partnerships with businesses, educational settings, social agencies, and creative venues in the North Texas region and beyond;

1.4    Enrich the learning experience by integrating interdisciplinary, international and multicultural content throughout the graduate and undergraduate curriculum;

1.5    Improve student learning outcomes by transforming instruction in large-enrollment undergraduate classes;

1.6    Develop and implement comprehensive and integrated enrollment management and financial aid plans designed to increase the quality and diversity of the student body; and

1.7    Increase retention and facilitate timely graduation through enhanced advising and progress tracking programs, student services, and activities designed to increase student engagement, satisfaction and success, with a particular focus on a student’s first year at UNT.

STRATEGIC GOAL 2

Increased Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity

 

UNT will significantly increase its levels of funded research, scholarly productivity and artistic expression in order to enhance undergraduate and graduate education, contribute to economic growth, and improve UNT’s standing among peer institutions. 

 

Strategies:

2.1    Target resources toward increasing the amount of federal dollars that support research at UNT;

2.2    Increase the research support for faculty from central administrative offices (research administration, procurement, legal) to create a more facilitative and effective operation that results in a quality infrastructure for research productivity;

2.3    Develop, recognize and reward the research, scholarship and creative activity of tenure and tenure-track faculty across the university, with a particular emphasis on the cultivation of interdisciplinary, international and multicultural connections;

2.4    Develop synergistic relationships with government, business, education, the arts, and others, in local, national, and international venues, to facilitate, fund or disseminate research; and

2.5    Actively develop the UNT Research Park as a vehicle for intensive and collaborative research activities.

Enhancing Reputation, Involvement and Support

 

Strengthen the university’s institutional identity, reputation and its relationships with internal and external communities and while significantly increasing external resources and levels of support.

 

Strategies:

 

3.1    Develop and execute electronic and print communication and news strategies to promote the university’s assets and accomplishments, advance and reinforce its brand identity and loyalty;

 

3.2    Develop and execute advertising, marketing, and outreach strategies to enlarge the UNT community by attracting new and increasingly diverse students, developing new partnerships at the local and global level, increasing participation in university events, and actively engaging residents of the North Texas area and beyond in the life of the university;

 

3.3    Cultivate stronger participation within the UNT community through enhanced internal communication mechanisms for information dissemination and feedback matched to the diverse needs of faculty, staff, students and alumni;

 

3.4    Expand the donor base through new constituent relationship programs, facilitated through  collaborative work with vice presidents/directors, deans, chairs, faculty, professional staff, North Texas Exes and the UNT Foundation;

 

3.5    Implement new centrally coordinated strategic fundraising systems and partnerships creating more efficient and effective fundraising efforts;

 

3.6    Align advancement priorities and activities in support of UNT strategic goals including research/scholarship, student centered education, athletics, institutional effectiveness and the key initiatives arising from the pursuit of these goals;

 

3.7    Provide value added communication and activities designed to inspire increased involvement/membership in North Texas Exes and increased investment by alumni and friends in the life of UNT.

Leveraging Student Success and Institutional Reputation through Athletics

 

Promote outstanding academic and athletic achievement among our student-athletes while showcasing UNT to the general public through regional and national media and hosted events. 

 

Strategies:

 

4.1   Continue to build an academic environment that supports student-athletes, realizing retention and graduation rates at or above those of UNT’s NCAA counterparts;

 

4.2  Support student-athletes to maximize their intellectual and physical capabilities and compete in a manner befitting a major Division I-A program;

 

4.3  Build school spirit and increase alumni, faculty, staff and student participation in campus activities through increased participation in the game-day experiences and sporting events; and

 

4.4  Increase the visibility and reputation of the University through positive local, regional and national media exposure.

Provide human, financial and physical resources, reduce costs, and improve managerial and operational accountability and effectiveness to achieve the university mission and vision.

 

Strategies:

 

5.1    Maximize and diversify funding mix from all appropriate revenue sources;

 

5.2    Develop and implement integrated management and resource allocation systems which align strategic/unit level planning, focus resource allocation, provide timely access to relevant information, facilitate implementation/direction of action plans, and require ongoing performance evaluation, and continual improvement;

 

5.3    Recruit, select, reward, and retain an increasingly diverse and productive faculty and staff of sufficient size and expertise appropriate for a recognized student-centered public research university;

 

5.4    Provide training and development opportunities to enable faculty and staff to be successful in their job responsibilities, including the establishment of a Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment to support faculty development and evaluate the instruction-learning process; and

Internationalization

 

UNT will enrich the preparation of its graduates and enhance its contributions to the global community by internationalizing the curriculum and increasing the involvement of students and faculty in educational and research opportunities that broaden their relationships at the international level.

 

Strategies:

2.1    Establish a task force to review and make recommendations regarding the current level and quality of internationalization / globalization at UNT.  In addition to a review of curriculum and faculty and student involvement, the report will include an assessment of policies, infrastructure, resource allocation, and the institutional environment/culture as they relate to internationalization;

2.2    Ensure all students are prepared to live and work in the global community by systematically increasing the international content of the curriculum in the university core and in individual degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels;

2.3    Actively recruit and support international students and faculty members, connecting them with learning communities and helping them to connect deeply with the life of the university;

2.4    Increase the participation of faculty and students in study-abroad and other international learning and research experiences

2.5    Foster partnerships with communities at the international level, so that faculty, staff and students work with leaders outside the university to promote research, enrich education, provide public service and support the professional advancement of all participants;

2.6    Assure that a diversity of viewpoints and cultural perspectives are an integral part of the research community at UNT;

2.7    Include international recruitment as a significant part of a comprehensive and integrated enrollment management plan designed to increase the quality and diversity of the undergraduate student body;

3.1    Facilitate students’ understanding of their own field of study by placing disciplinary knowledge in the broader context of interdisciplinary work;

3.2    Embed learning within the practical context of the broader society through partnerships with businesses, educational settings, social agencies, and creative venues in the North Texas region and beyond;

3.3    Foster significant partnerships with surrounding communities at local, national and international levels, so that faculty, staff and students work with leaders outside the university to promote research, enrich education, provide public service and support the professional advancement of all participants;

3.4    Develop synergistic relationships with government, business, education, the arts, and others, in local, national, and international venues, to facilitate, fund or disseminate research;

3.5    Expand activities that promote student wellness, civility, leadership, and clarification of values and identity;

3.6    Enhance user-focused web sites to facilitate communication, maintain connections with constituents and broaden public relations outreach; and
